Matthews Roofing Carlisle provide a wide range of slate roofing services from a single slate repair to a complete re-roof. We offer a wide range of slates including, Westmorland Green, Burlington, Spanish and Brazilian. Slate is durable, hard wearing and watertight and is the material of choice when you need a traditional roof finish. There are numerous types of slate available on the market today including:
Welsh Slate which is purple/blue in colour and is one of the highest quality slates available.
Burlington Slate is also available which is grey/blue and green in colour.
The very Westmorland Slate from the Lake District.
Spanish slates which are grey in colour and the Ballachulish and Eskdale slates from Scotland.

Installing a traditional slate roof is a highly skilled task and very time consuming due to every slate having to be properly aligned and fixed into place. Traditional slates use random sized slates and the the larger slates have to be fitted at the bottom of the roof graduating to the smaller slates at the top to give the traditional random effect. When expertly fitted using the correct materials, slate roofs provide a traditional looking weathertight roof with a long lifespan.

At Matthews Roofing Carlisle, before work commences all the slates are pre-graded into 3 different thicknesses giving the roof a far superior finish. We start by fitting the highest quality breathable membrane felt which allows the roof to breathe properly. We then fit 2×1 battens before fitting the slates starting at the bottom with the heaviest ones first finishing with the lightest slate at the top.
